That night Leola had just tucked the girls into bed when Joe reappeared, drenched by the storm.

When she let him in, he pulled her to him—so hard, she grunted.

“I couldn’t let you go without a proper farewell,” he murmured, rain dripping from his hat brim. “I’m sorry for letting ol’ Mr. Owen cow me like he did, leaving you to face him alone.” He stepped back. “I intended to come back in time for supper. Then the storm hit and I was desperate to get the youngest plants inside before they were ruined.”

Leola peered up at him.

“I knew somehow we’d see each other—though I’d started to lose hope.” She grinned. “Yet here you are.”

Joe eyed the ring, lying exactly where she’d left it hours earlier. After the scene with Mr. Owen, Leola had felt so addled she hadn’t wanted to move the box, thinking it might jinx their future. Now Joe traipsed across the room, yanking the ring from its case.

Returning, he slipped it onto her finger.

“I wish you to wear this as a promise not to me but from me—to always love and help you, come what may.” He gazed deep into her eyes. “I don’t care how long I have to wait. I only hope when you’ve done what needs doing, I might still become your husband someday.”

Leola’s heart felt ready to burst.

“I can’t imagine otherwise, Joe. Wish I had a ring to put on your finger as my own promise to be faithful.”

They kissed then full and deep, ignoring the growing pond beneath them—and the two little girls in the kitchen doorway, gaping in wonder and awe.
